From Walking to Half Marathons: How the Starting Line Scholarship Changed My Life

When Barbara first discovered the Starting Line Scholarship, running was not yet part of her life. She had been walking daily for about two and a half years and noticed the impact movement had on her mental health, helping manage anxiety, depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and grief. But when the idea of adding running came up, she was not sure how to begin.

“I had never run and didn’t know where to start,” she shared. “I happened across the Starting Line Scholarship at about that time. It just seemed a perfect fit.”

A New Beginning with Running and Mental Health

Before the program, running was unfamiliar territory. Walking had already been transformative, but the scholarship opened up a new path: one where structured training, peer support, and encouragement came together to strengthen both physical and mental wellbeing.

Through the program, Barbara discovered the power of community. “So much was meaningful,” she explained. “But probably top of the list was the online connection to other recipients in my cohort.” That peer connection, alongside coaching, gear, and regular encouragement, created a foundation that carried her well beyond the 12-week program.

Going the Distance

The Starting Line Scholarship didn’t just help Barbara start running, it helped her dream bigger. Since completing the program, she has already run five half marathons with her sixth scheduled in December. She has even attempted a marathon and plans to try again when the right race comes along.

This journey is about more than miles. It is about proving what is possible. “Don’t let doubt get in the way of applying,” she encourages. “Once I hit submit, I started to really doubt whether I should have applied, but I’m so glad I did and was chosen. It has been life-changing.”

Looking Ahead

With continued running goals on the horizon, Barbara hopes future cohorts will receive a small addition to the program: “A book of self-affirmations,” she suggested - something to encourage positive self-talk along the way.

Barbara’s story is a powerful reminder that the Starting Line Scholarship is not just about starting to run; it is about building confidence, community, and resilience.
