Start Each Run With a Warm-Up Walk

They say, “Start each day with a grateful heart.” At Still I Run, I like to think we say: “Start each run with a warm-up walk.”
I had the opportunity to join our current Staring Line Scholarship cohort for one of their weekly runs, not as a coordinator or leader, but simply as a fellow human showing up. I joined the group as they were preparing to head out, and what struck me immediately was the simplicity and power of the moment: they were walking. All together. Side by side.
Before the running event began, before any watches were started or paces found, there was this quiet and beautiful moment of togetherness; this is the act of warming up. No rush, no pressure. Just a group of people making space to ease in, to connect, to breathe.
It reminded me that in a world that constantly pushes us to move faster, accomplish more, and perform, there is deep value in slowing down first. Especially when it comes to mental health.

This warm-up walk was more than just a physical preparation, it was emotional and even spiritual. I could feel the calm before the effort, the unity before each person ran their own path forward. Because that’s what this program is all about. Not just running, but healing. Connecting. Reclaiming space. Showing up for yourself with a whole community behind you.
Watching the cohort participants and alumni mentors support one another, no matter the pace, no matter the distance, filled me with so much pride and gratitude. These individuals didn’t just show up for a run, they showed up for themselves, for each other, and for the movement that is Still I Run.
As I stood there on the path, I was reminded that progress does not always start with a sprint. It starts with a breath. A pause. A walk.
And maybe that’s what makes this journey sustainable, the grace we give ourselves to warm up.
To the Starting Line Scholarship runners: you inspire me. You remind me that it’s not about how fast we go, but that we keep going. And that every forward step, even a walking one, is a victory.
Here’s to starting each run with a warm-up walk.
Here’s to movement. And healing. And mental health.
Here’s to meeting at the Starting Line.
Here’s to Still I Run.
